Colourful Morons came about one NaNoWriMo when my pal Elinor lamented to me that she had always dreamed of playing D&D, but didn’t have friends nerdy enough to play it with. She. Broke. My. Heart. I just had to do something. I started an online campaign, and now Elinor can live that sweet nerdy-ass life!
We started with D&D 5e’s introductory adventure, the Lost Mine of Phandelver, and now we’re working through Princes of the Apocalypse. After we’re done that, I have a little epic tier adventure planned … (muwahahah).
What’s with the name? Our original trio was three tieflings with colourful skin, and “colourful morons” came up as a placeholder for when we came with a nice name. But then it stuck.
Behold, the colourful morons!
Elinor as Zephyr, genasi rogue

Zephyr bonded with the gang over Kyrai and Elymas’s dead bodies. Happy to get out of town, he joined up with Carrion and Esteem to go destroy the elemental evil. As an air genasi, he’s got potential interest in the Cult of Howling Hatrid. He spends most of his time flirting with Carrion and smuggling daggers on his own naked body somehow.
Kelly as Carrion, tiefling barbarian

Carrion is so, so angry. With a proclivity toward chaos, he was responsible for the burning down of Phandalin. He joined the Cult of Eternal Flame, found his long-lost sister, quit the cult of Eternal Flame, failed to climb a rope after breaking his hand punching a stone wall, was taken captive by the Cult of Eternal Flame, had his broken hand “split” instead of “splinted”, and made a pact to work with the Cult of Eternal Flame: he helps them take down the Cult of Crushing Wave, and the Cult of Eternal Flame doesn’t kill him just yet.
Kathleen as Esteem, tiefling wizard

Yep, I’m playing a character in my own campaign. Esteem exists to help balance the party because two barbarians alone would have died immediately. After her mentor was murdered, Esteem joined the Colourful Morons in hopes of getting revenge. Once that proved impossible (because her pal Carrion burnt Phandalin to the ground), she went with them to investigate the Elemental Evil. Along the way she began research into necromancy, was courted by a malicious demon lord (Mephistopheles), died, signed a pact with aforementioned demon lord and returned to life, and is now held captive by the Cult of Eternal Flame.
